Participation - What to Expect

Communication and interaction with players is important, that hasn‘t been an issue with SMS iirc. Honestly, if I were a dev I wouldn’t want too much interaction with us sim racers either  We don’t understand game development, or at least most of us, that’s just a fact so I can only try to imagine how frustrating many comments have to be after you put in weeks or even months of hard work and things go wrong because that’s how it goes sometimes. After all you just have to press a few buttons and *tadaaa* X,Y or Z is ready, don‘t you? 😛

Maybe one day you have something like Sophy (Sony‘s AI) that instead of driving against players just tests things for the devs, a super human AI that over night does thousands of hours worth of testing to find bugs. That‘d be very cool.

This was why WMD1 and 2 were so unique and fascinating. Sure, we'll never get to see the full workings of things - there are business dealings that we should not be privy to (licensing negotiations, for example - though I was told about a couple of pCARS licences that were eye watering) - but the insight we get as players to projects like this is invaluable. It has become more commonplace in the years since WMD1 opened its doors, all the way back in October 2011, but it is still very much the exception to see day-to-day interaction with the devs making the game, and helping shape it into something that we then see on the virtual store shelves.

But as I keep saying, that can only happen if we are active and the devs are active in return. Positive, negative, all of it helps. And as Austin rightly points out, it's not just negative toxicity that needs stamping on, it's the positive too.

Together we can build an awesome game.

(Is that enough to get the keys to the Lambo for a drive Ian? :D)

I'll actually extend an olive branch here and say the opposite is true; I believe our overall community is one of the smartest and most articulate in all of gaming. Some content creators and even notorious trolls are far more astute than they give themselves credit for.

Besides WMD1&2 I've worked as a product manager at a software company so I'm completely aware of the feeling of wanting to fix that particular bug, it wouldn't take long, but other tasks just keep on jumping in front of the queue.
'Devs' as a term is so often used incorrectly in this context too, usually they work on whatever is assigned to them. It's the higher-ups that need convincing.

But when it comes to judging ones own tone before feeding back, just ask yourself if you'd still use those words if Ian's mother were racing your post. Because apparently she does. 🥲

Unfortunately, I was only playing WMD 1 on the console, so it wasn't worth supporting me. Unfortunately, I didn't have the necessary cash for WMD 2. But I was happy to support the guys at AMS2. And just look at what has been and will be created through the community's involvement. Of course, there were a few setbacks. But I still take a positive view of it. Even if in the end a few things in pCARS 2 annoyed me, I will support the upcoming product again. Simply because the core has been around since GTR. And GTR2, as well as GTL Legends, were and still are my absolute favorites.
