The General Motorsport Discussion Thread

Here's some classic Bathurst goodness for you all.
1991 Tooheys 1000 top 10 shootout. 2 clips here. First is the king of the mountain himself, Peter Brock. VN Commodore, 100% commitment. Second clip is a young Mark Skaife in Godzilla (R32 Skyline. Like i really needed to specify that..) This was back in the Group A era of the ATCC (Australian Touring Car Championship)

There is a clip out there of the full top 10 shootout from the 1991 race, i can post that too if anyone wants to see it.

^ Here you go chief. Some 40 odd minutes of early 90's Australian motorsport nostalgia.
Also featuring in this top 10 shootout is 3 time BTCC champ, Win Percy, in a HRT Commodore.
Enjoy.

Highlights from Bathurst on the weekend.
I missed a large chunk of the middle of the race, cause we had a power outage here. There's also an extended 50 min highlight clip i can post if anyone wants to see that. Cloud & fog across the top in the final few laps was crazy.

I promise this will be my last Bathurst video i post this year. I may break that promise.. We'll see.
Here's the controversial but iconic & memorable finish to the 1992 Tooheys 1000. Race was red flagged towards the end due to poor weather.

And here's some vintage F1 that popped up on Youtube while searching for something else.

V8 Supercars @ the Gold Coast 500 this weekend, highlights from practice 2. Lot of drivers going full motocross style over the kerbs on the back straight chicane. Ever seen a V8 Supercar fly?

See, while I think the drivers jumping the kerbs is awesome, and like everyone else on the planet, secretly harbour a deep appreciation for mayhem and carnage, one has to wonder at what point track safety features like chicanes with sausage kerbs become more dangerous than the problem they were trying to solve in the first place?

I know, right? Personally, i think sausage kerbs are like QR codes. They've massively outstayed their welcome and need to go. And they're kinda useless, lol. You don't need a kerb that sits up higher than Mt. Everest and kills everything that touches it. Just use regular, flatter kerbs.
The commentators were also saying that 2 sections of the track/road have been resurfaced in recent times. One of which is on the corner leading onto that back straight. So the drivers are getting more grip and traction than wheelspin coming out of the corner this year. And they're arriving at that chicane complex carrying more speed than they usually would.

British Touring Car Championship (BTCC)

Does anyone go and watch these races in the UK. I often go to watch them and take my camera along. The Porsche Carrera Cup/Sprint Challenge & British GT at MSV Donington, Brands Hatch & Snetterton are my favourites.

I also like Thruxton and Silverstone for the faster lap racing. All these are within an hour or two drive for me so I watch and take photos these past few years. A great day out.

Croft, Cadwell Park, Oulton Park and Knockhill I have been but are little too far for a day visit really.

Here are the full races of the Finals at Brands Hatch this year in October r28,29,30.(y)

"The uploader has not made the video available in your country"

Boo.

You guys in the UK are lucky. The list of tracks, many of them world-class and historic venues at that, within realistic day-trip or even weekend trip distance is astounding.

I think you can watch on certain browsers or VPN's but yes they do restrict them for some reason. We are lucky to have so many so close really. I have seen some great races and usually find a good spot if you are willing to walk round a few times.

My local/closest track (Sydney Motorsport Park/Eastern Creek Raceway) is a bit of a drive from where i am. Maybe 1.5-2 hours? Went there with dad to watch the V8's night race back in 2021, but i can't remember how long it took us to get there. Using the motorway is quicker, but most of it is toll roads to reach that area, and you need an E-tag. And i don't have one. So the only other option is a rat run of surface roads.
Which means i don't frequent that place very often.
And Bathurst is a few hours drive away..

Bathurst would be worth the drive. Or a 16 hour flight...

There's three road courses and a smattering of oval tracks within an hour of me (same city as that Ogonoski guy), but they're all pretty small. There's two road courses I would call world-class tracks in Western Canada, but they're 2.5 and 12 hours away from me. But there's a ton of MX tracks and that's where I live.

Oh, it's definitely worth a 16 hour flight, lol. Just make sure you do it for a race weekend, otherwise you'll just see regular traffic and the occasional garbage truck circulating. Hardly exciting stuff..

I have been up to Bathurst for the V8's, way back in 1996. And for some strange reason, we didn't take the camera with us. Dad, myself, dad's friend and his kid (who's my age. We all knew each other) all crammed into dad's friend's 2 door Jaguar XJS for the trip. Saturday & Sunday we were there, and camped up the top at McPhillamy Park camping grounds. Had views of the whole run across the top, from McPhillamy & Skyline, right down to Forrest's Elbow. Rained on and off most of Sunday (race day) and we ended up leaving mid way through and came home. By the time we got home and were watching the rest of the race on tv, the rain had stopped..
One of the highlights, we saw Alan Jones' Falcon catch on fire, and come past on the back of a flatbed. Think it broke a fuel line. Here's a video i found of it. We could see the flames in the distance, through the trees.

The late, great Alan Moffat is on the commentary team in that clip.

I have just been playing MXvsATV Legends which I have never played, it has some great trails and tracks if you haven't played it with some lovely graphics often on sale so worth a buy, some amazing long narrow tracks in this game from snow to canyons and forests.

@Womp83 I can imagine the distance and off road tracks you have out there with long distances like with Canada above, I get used to it here but forget how small the UK really is when you see the massive size of other countries on tv or in maps.

p.s Was Sydney Motorsport Park in Project Cars it rings a bell but can't think off the top of my head.

re: Sydney Motorsport Park. I just remembered it was the reboot of the codies GRID 2019/Legend games that had this track in, I remember it was a nice little track with very hot dry/yellow grass (y)
